Employees’ views of trade unions in the Republic of Ireland
This report examines workers’ orientations towards, and views of, trade unions in Ireland. The data are drawn from the Working in Ireland Survey (WIIS), 2025. This is the second such WIIS survey. The first was conducted in 2021. Here, we look specifically at the structure of union membership, members’ and non-members’ disposition towards unions, the perceived effectiveness of unions, the incidence and reasons for union free-riding (-loading), and the coverage of collective bargaining. Our findings from the current survey are compared with those derived from WIIS 1 where appropriate and are set against the public policy context, particularly the potential influence of the Adequate Minimum Wages Directive and the Irish Government’s attendant Action Plan.
